What do people eat on Formentera?

Formentera, a picturesque island in the Balearic Islands near Ibiza, is known not only for its breathtaking beaches and pristine natural beauty, but also for its rich culinary traditions. On this small island you can eat all kinds of delicious Mediterranean dishes, which often consist of fresh seafood, such as gambas, langostas (lobsters) and different types of fish. They are often caught the same day in the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean. The kitchens work a lot with local products, such as olive oil, spices and salt (extracted from the salt pans on Formentera). A classic authentic dish is
Peix Sec
, dried fish, traditionally served with a simple salad of locally grown vegetables.

Culinary exploration on Formentera

Although smaller than its neighboring island of Ibiza, Formentera offers an unforgettable culinary experience that reflects the island’s rich history. In Formentera’s cuisine you will find both traditional Spanish and specifically Mediterranean influences. However, there is always a strong emphasis on daily fresh, local ingredients.

The basics of Formentera’s cuisine

Fresh seafood usually forms the basis of Formentera’s cuisine. They are often served as
frit de mar
, a dish of various fried seafood seasoned with local spices. Another popular dish is
arroz a la marinera
, rice cooked in fish broth, with onions, garlic, herbs and tomato.

Modern influences

Some restaurants have revamped traditional cuisine and created a great “fusion” of old and new. Therefore, restaurants such as Bona Espina and Blue Bar not only feature classics on the menu, but also innovative dishes that do full justice to local products.

    Fun places to eat

Formentera has a huge selection of great restaurants. We like to tip restaurant Pascual in the picturesque village of Sant Ferran, where quality dishes come out of the kitchen prepared with daily fresh ingredients. Another popular dining option is Hotel Cala Saona, located on the beautiful beaches of Playa de Cala Saona. In addition to comfortable apartments and insane views, this hotel also has an excellent restaurant. Here you can sip delicious cocktails and sample dishes of Mediterranean cuisine. Also fun is Fonda Pepe, a legendary little bar where you can meet locals and enjoy a good cocktail in an authentic setting.

    Delicious breakfasts on the coast

Of course, there is nothing better than having a delicious breakfast on one of Formentera’s most beautiful beaches. At Hotel Es Marès, for example, where a fantastic breakfast is served, including a beautiful view of the calm waters of Playa ses Illetes. This beach has fine sand and clear blue water and is an ideal place to start the day. For a more casual setting, you can also visit one of the many cozy bars along the coast. If you go very early, you might still catch the pink glow of the sunrise!

Another great breakfast spot is the Gecko Hotel & Beach Club. This stylish hotel on Playa de Migjorn offers a zaaaaal breakfast with stunning sea views – the perfect place to start a day of adventures.

    Cultural heritage

Besides all the culinary delights, Formentera also has a rich cultural heritage waiting to be discovered. The La Mola lighthouse, for example, is a must-see. This iconic spot offers phenomenal views of the island and surrounding sea. The high cliffs and breathtaking views make this an ideal place to take great photos.

After your visit to the lighthouse, sit back and relax at one of the many charming restaurants nearby, such as Restaurante Pascual with its fantastic cuisine. Slightly more traditional is Restaurante Ca na Joana in Sant Francesc, with a cozy and authentic setting.

Other beautiful places to visit are Talaya Formentera, Sant Ferran and the beautiful sandy beaches of Playa de Migjorn.
