Easter in Spain
Semana Santa in Ibiza
Semana Santa means “holy week” in Spanish. This holy week is from April 2 to April 9, 2023 and is celebrated extensively in Spain and so is Ibiza. During this week, many parades can be found in different places in Ibiza, with these parades focusing on the Easter story, which is also the last seven days of Lent.
Holy Week begins on April 2, which in Spanish is also called the “Domingo de Ramos,” the day Jesus arrives in Jerusalem. Starting this day, several processions are held daily, with the largest being held in Ibiza Town and Santa Eularia. These parades revolve around passion, death and the commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and are enacted by adherents in medieval clothing from Catholic churches. They carry large platforms with images of saints on them during a procession of 20 to 40 people. Very impressive to see, and definitely worth a visit when you are in Ibiza between April 2 and 9!
The largest parade takes place on Good Friday, April 8, in the old town of Dalt Vila in Ibiza City. Here they walk the procession from the cathedral at the top of the Dalt Vila through the narrow streets down toward Ibiza Town. During this parade, do not expect merriment, but rather sad music.
