If you like a little drama or are curious about true Ibiza traditions, then you really need to be in Santa Eularia or Ibiza town on the last weekend of March.

Fervent Catholics worship their Saints by carrying the holy images on decorated bars. Thursday night (Jueves Santo) all the statues are carried from the churches of Ibiza town to the cathedral at the top of the old town, to “sleep” there before coming down again Friday night (Viernes Santo). A religious spectacle that lasts a few hours. The pace of walking and the drums make it look a bit like a funeral procession. The bearers walk barefoot and hide their faces under the tall, pointed hoods with the holes cut out only for their eyes. The bare feet and these outfits are atonement for Christ’s Passion and Mary’s Passion. But we think the robes look a bit like the Ku Klux Klan.

Families then sit together to weave freshly cut palm leaves into works of art. If you want to see a different kind of Ibiza and are on the island, take this opportunity and live the Semana Santa with the locals. Note that Semana Santa thus begins as early as Thursday and a second Easter Day is not celebrated in Ibiza. Photos courtesy of Dutch Duo Wildlife.
